It has been some time since I read any of the tales - although I intend to revisit them soon. thanks again Rowan

I am interested in the obviousNeo-Platonism of the edition of the Nights that I use--it is published by Norton, translated by Haddawy. The Tale of the Fisherman is a witty and ironic exploration of medieval ideas about Fortune and Destiny. You find the same musings in Chaucer, or Dante, Boethius of course. I am enjoying your stuff. Thanks Mary V

Comments It's very good if people are informed of the fact that 1001 nights is a translation of orginal PERSIAN tales into Arabic. It's 1001 persian nights if you decide to call it that way, the original Name was "ghessehaaye hezaaro yek shab" which is exactly the same thing as the tales of 1001 nights. It's just like saying that Colombus discovered India! How do you like that? :)

Comments I found your site QUITE by accident but once I did and heard the BEAUTIFUL Rimsky-Korsikov score I stayed and read your page just so I could hear the whole thing. It is by far one of my FAVORITE classical pieces and has been for a long time. Ever since I was a little girl I have loved "Arabian Nights" movies. I still do. (In fact at the end of this month here in the USA they are playing a new version of Arabian Nights) To this day, even as an artist, I draw "arabian themes" such as women in harem outfits and men in arabian costumes. Also, because my middle Name is Jean, I ended up with the nickName "genie" or Jeannie as in Barbara Eden in I dream of... :-) I used to wish when I was small that I really were a Genie. To grant some Master (or Mistress :-)) whatever he or she wished. I found your page extremely informative and well worth a look see. :-) I even recommended your page to a friend of mine who is also a classical music lover and hopefully, in the process, will stay and listen to the score AND read your pag

I dip into them often. Also enjoy editions geared towards children (mainly for their illustrations). For the best single book about the Nights read: The Arabian Nights: a Companion, by Robert Irwin (Penguin, 1994) which gives brilliant insights into the sociological, folkloric and linguistic issues surrounding these tales which continue to amuse and delight people of all nations, backgrounds, and ages.
